While we all hate grease and grime and want it eliminated from our homes, most of us don’t like the thought of using harsh chemicals to do so. Not only do such products omit a powerful chemical odour and may be harmful to our health, they are also harmful to the environment.
Here are a few tips on how to tackle grease and grime in your home without harming you and your family, or the environment, and without having to delve too deeply into your pockets:
- Use vinegar
Affordable and readily available, white vinegar makes a fantastic ecologically sound cleaning product and can be used to clean the grease that can build up in and around your oven, remove unsightly scuffs and scrapes from shoes on your floors, eliminate soap scum and other residue that can accumulate in your bathroom, and even get rid of tough carpet stains.
Take a bucket and mix equal parts of white vinegar with water, then simply dip a cloth or sponge into the solution and use it for cleaning all around your home. Because vinegar has a natural acidity, it is also highly effective at getting rid of fungus and bacteria that can grow in your home and pose a serious threat to your health.
- Try baking soda
Baking soda, not unlike white vinegar, is another cheap, environmentally friendly and widely available product that you can use to safely and effectively keep your home clean. Not only does the soda act as a deodorizer to help eliminate nasty whiffs, but with its powerful absorbing action, it can enable you to get rid of stains and grease all over your home, too.
Leave an open tub of baking soda in your refrigerator and it will help to absorb the smell of any food that may be turning mouldy, or even use it as a cleaner for your rugs and carpets. Simply sprinkle it over the fibres, leave it to sit for a few minutes and then vacuum it up.
Alternatively, you could pour a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda into your sinks and drains, then flush them through with hot water to help unblock any material that may be clogging them up. You can also make a paste from water and baking soda and apply it to any greasy and grimy surfaces to help safely clean them with minimal elbow grease.
- Good old lemon power
Lemons have been used as a cleaning and freshening agent for centuries, and their power is just as effective now as it was back then. Combining lemon juice with baking soda and vinegar, gives you a powerful, environmentally friendly and fragrant household cleaner. You can even leave some lemon peel in your garbage disposal unit and not only will it help to sharpen the blades, but it will keep your kitchen smelling fresh and clean.
The juice of lemons alone is also wonderful for eliminating bacteria from countertops, bathrooms and even wooden chopping boards. In fact, there are so many purposes for lemons around the home that to list them all would take some time.
If you will be using the services of a professional cleaning company in your home, then you can ask them to natural products in their grease and grime tackling routine, and they should be more than happy to comply.
