Just because you’ve reached your senior years, doesn’t automatically mean that life gets easier and a cleaning doesn’t have to be done; if only that were true! However, you should be able to enjoy your life as you approach retirement and cleaning should be made as easy as possible. Here are a few cleaning tips to make life easier if you’re a senior:
Don’t be afraid to ask for help:
Cleaning your entire home can be overwhelming, and there are usually people in our lives that we can reach out to for help, we just don’t like to. However, while we may not enjoy asking for help, our friends and family members are usually only too happy to assist and are grateful that we have trusted them enough to ask.
Have a cleaning checklist:
A list of what needs to be cleaned, along with how often, can not only help you to focus your cleaning efforts but can be helpful to those whom you have asked to help. They can simply walk in through your door, look at the list and get to work! As a senior citizen, it may also be that you have some memory problems, and for that reason alone, a cleaning list can be extremely useful.
De-clutter as much as possible:
Hoarding items, no matter how much sentimental significance they have, can simply mean more items to dust and can lead to your home looking unnecessarily untidy. Try to be ruthless when it comes to items that you have no use for, and which are taking up a lot space, and get your friends and family involved if you’re not able to move the items yourself, or if you want help deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Have a garage sale and lend the proceeds to your retirement fund or donate unwanted items to local charities.
After de-cluttering, try to keep it that way!
Once you’ve gotten rid of all unwanted items, it will not only be much easier to see what you’ve got left, but it will be easier to keep clean, too. Try to not replace items with other clutter, keep your home as object free as possible. That isn’t to say that you can’t have ornaments and objet d’art, of course, but try to have only those items that you really enjoy looking at, on display. If you have a lot of ornaments and trinkets, consider displaying them in an attractive cabinet to reduce your cleaning even more.
Consider getting professional help: if the latter years of your life are being hindered by cleaning, then you should seriously consider employing someone to help you keep a clean home, while you enjoy your retirement. They need not cost the Earth and can greatly improve your quality of life.
