How Often Should You Clean Your Bathroom?

Mirror cleaning

Cleaning your bathroom thoroughly should happen once a week, ideally, and thoroughly usually includes scrubbing the toilet and washing the sinks, tub and/or shower stall. However, some areas of the average bathroom may need to be tackled with a little more frequency:

Frequent cleaning of your toilet:

Depending upon how many people are using your toilet, you should probably think about cleaning it at least twice a week, as it is often the most common source of the most germs in any home. Every time the toilet is flushed, thousands of potentially harmful bacteria are sprayed into the air and can settle on any surfaces in the vicinity. It may be enough to simply wipe down the seat and cistern with bleach and a damp cloth, but if a ring has begun to form around the bowl, then you might need to scrub at it with an abrasive sponge.

Sinks and mirrors:

With toothpaste stains and loose hairs, sinks and mirrors may need to be cleaned every day for them to look presentable, but of course the frequency at which you clean them is up to you. Toothpaste splashes are best cleaned up right away, before they harden, and hairs should be collected and disposed of before they look unsightly and begin to block up your sink.

Emptying the trash:

Depending upon the type of trash in your bathroom can, it may need to be emptied once a day to prevent it from smelling and/or spilling over. It might also be wise to place a liner inside the can so that damp or gunky items don’t stick to the bottom and create extra, smelly mess.

Refreshing the linen:

Towels can quickly get smelly and when they don’t dry out fully, bacteria can grow on them. Hanging towels outside to dry is a great way of keeping them fresher for longer, but if you’re not able to do this (and can’t open any windows to let natural in), then you’ll simply have to wash and change them more frequently.

So, deeper cleaning of your bathroom should ideally happen once a week, but there are many other areas of the bathroom which will need to be cleaned with more frequency to keep them hygienic and to prevent your bathroom from looking dirty and smelling less than fresh. If keeping your bathroom this clean is beyond your capabilities (or desires!), then you might want to think about hiring a professional cleaning service to come in regularly and keep it clean and free of germs.
