Keeping a clean home has always been a priority for many people, but since the ongoing pandemic, many more of us are keen to know whether the cleaning methods we currently use are appropriate for killing viruses such as Covid-19. Read on to know more about which methods of cleaning are best for keeping our homes hygienically clean:

What are the three main virus prevention methods of cleaning?

You’ve probably heard all three of these words before: sanitizing, disinfecting and sterilizing, but did you know that each one has a different process?

  • Sanitizing – this word describes the process of washing, cleaning and removing dirt. It typically eliminates dust, debris and surface germs.
  • Disinfection – pathogenic microorganisms (and most other organisms) on surfaces are destroyed during this process, and are therefore unable to transmit infections to anyone or anything.
  • Sterilization – in this method of cleaning a surface, all microbial bacteria are killed, including fungi and viruses.

Can you make a homemade virus prevention cleaning solution?

Yes, you absolutely can make your own effective cleaning solution strong enough to kill viruses in your home. Typically, there are 4 solutions that can easily and cheaply be bought, and which are safe enough for use in the home, while being effective at killing germs and harmful bacteria:

  1. Hydrogen peroxide – when used appropriately and carefully, hydrogen peroxide is a fantastic disinfectant, but it must be left to sit for up to 30 minutes on a surface for it to be fully effective.
  2. Surgical spirit or 70% isopropyl alcohol – this is the ideal concentration of alcohol for killing germs, and doesn’t need to be left on a surface for it to work.
  3. Bleach – while the smell of bleach is not so appealing, its’ germ busting properties are second to none.
  4. Vinegar – again, the smell might not be to everyone’s liking, but you can easily add a few drops of your favorite natural oil to the solution, and vinegar is a great cleaning agent.
