Dust is extremely difficult to eliminate entirely from your home, but with a few techniques and some special equipment, you can work to reduce dust to the point where it’s no longer a threat to your health. Alternatively, you can hire a cleaner to come in a couple of times a week (or as often as you like), and use their dust-banishing tricks to keep levels at a minimum.
If going it alone, here are 10 top tips to eliminate high dust levels in your home:
- Regularly wash and change your bedding
Dust mites, skin cells and dirt are all present on our bedding, no matter how clean we keep ourselves, so it’s important to change it at least once a week.
- De-clutter
Dust loves to settle on clutter, but dusting around the items will never fully eliminate it, and cleaning each item can be difficult and time consuming. To avoid a build-up of dust, reduce the clutter in your home as much as you can.
- Dust from top to bottom
Always begin your cleaning routine at the top surfaces of each room, to prevent you from having to clean twice.
- Invest in an air purifier
Helping to filter out the dust particles, air purifiers are great for anyone suffering with severe allergies.
- Vacuum often
While vacuuming every day might be a step too far for most of us, doing it twice a week is doable, and will help to significantly reduce dust levels in the home. Pay attention to high-traffic areas and use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate ai filter to remove as much dust as possible.
- Regularly clean your wooden or tiled floors
Sweeping (or vacuuming, just make sure to adjust it to the right setting) and mopping your wooden or tiled floors regularly can prevent dust from getting tracked all through your home and keep levels under control.
- Use microfiber cloths
Way more effective than feather dusters and other items, microfiber cloths are designed to attract and pick up the dust, instead of simply transferring it from one place to another.
- Shoe removal at the door
While you might not like having to ask guests to remove their shoes at the door, it does drastically reduce the amount of dirt, debris and dust that enters your home. Be sure to have all members of the household do it, too!
- Groom your pets
Grooming your pets often will help to reduce the amount of dander and dirt that gets spread all over your home and furniture, just remember to groom them in an area where you can easily clean it afterwards, such as a bathroom. Wash your pets bedding regularly, too.
- Just hire a cleaner – it’s much simpler!
A regular, professional cleaner who comes into your home at least twice a week to dust, polish and vacuum, can help keep it cleaner (obviously!) and give you more time to spend doing the things you love.
To help reduce dust levels in your home, clean it regularly using the above tips, or have a professional cleaner do it more effectively for you.
