With so many different cleaning products available today, the selection can be somewhat mind boggling, and knowing what will give the best results for cleaning your home, while being safe to use around kids, isn’t always easy.
Fortunately, there are a number of natural products that can be used with great effect for a variety of cleaning tasks around the home, and baking soda is just one of them. So, if you’re looking for a more natural but equally as effective cleaning product for use all around your home, why not try baking soda?
Here are just some of the ways you can use it:
In the fridge
Place an open box of baking soda inside the fridge and any foul smelling odors will be absorbed.
In the trash can
Trash cans often get smelly, especially when food waste leaks out and isn’t cleaned immediately, but sprinkling some baking soda into the bottom of the trash can help keep it smelling fresher.
Unclogging drains
Drains are inconvenient and often smelly when they’re blocked, but by pouring half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar down the sink, you might be able to fix the problem without calling out the plumber. Just make sure you wait for five minutes to let the solution work, before flushing it with hot water.
Stained containers
Containers are extremely convenient to use, but when certain foods are stored in them, they can leave behind an oily stain that’s hard to get rid of. However, by soaking the containers in warm water with a cup of baking soda added, you can remove virtually any stains.
Greasy pots and pans
Soak pots and pans with food stuck onto them, in hot water and a cup of baking soda. You should find that after a soak of around twenty minutes, the grease and hardened food debris will lift off easily.
Soap scum and mildew
A sponge moistened with water and dipped in baking soda, is great for removing soap scum and mildew from tiles, especially in the bathroom where it can commonly be a problem.
Laundry
Take a cup of baking soda and add it to your next laundry load to whiten up whites and freshen up all other colored items. Grease stains can also be removed by wetting the garment, covering the affected area with baking soda, spraying with white vinegar and leaving it for up to twenty minutes. Then, throw it into the machine and admire the results.
Crayon on walls
Lightly scrub your walls with a damp sponge dabbed in baking soda, and you should find that pesky crayon stains are easily removed.
Many American homes have baking soda in their pantries, and if you’ve got a tub of it but haven’t yet tried using it to get things clean, freshen up your laundry or remove mold and mildew from tiles, perhaps you should!
