What Should You Do Before Having Your Home Professionally Cleaned?

Having a professional cleaning company come into your home and get it spotlessly clean, can leave you with a deeply intense feeling of satisfaction. Your home is hygienically clean, and you didn’t have to lift a finger; I mean how much better can it get?

But, as convenient and effective as hiring a professional cleaning service is, there are still a couple of things you need to do before they visit. They can remove 95% of the effort involved with cleaning, but the remaining 5% (which is nothing, let’s face it), is down to you.

So, let’s take a closer look at some of the things you can (and should) do before every visit from a professional cleaning service, to ensure you get the very most out of the experience:

  • Declutter – while the cleaning team can pick things up and move them out of the way, not only does this slow them down (meaning you need to pay them for longer), but it might mean that things end up where you don’t want them to be. So, failure to declutter and carry out a quick tidy up before a professional clean, could you leave out of pocket, and eat into your precious time. It doesn’t mean that you need to spend hours throwing things away or stashing them in a closet until they’ve gone, but you should make sure that all of the surfaces in the spaces you want them to clean, are free of too many items.
  • Ensure pets are kept safely while cleaning is underway – whether you have pets that don’t take kindly to strangers in their home, or are worried that your pets will distract the cleaners from their work in some way, keeping them in a safe space while cleaning is underway, is usually best for everyone involved.
  • Talk to your cleaners – if you have specific cleaning needs, or there are certain things you don’t want them to touch, for example, you must communicate this to them clearly, before they start their work. You may also have certain rooms you want them to clean, and certain rooms you don’t want them to go into, which must also be clearly communicated to avoid any unnecessary confusion, dissatisfaction, or upset on anyone’s part.
  • Give them a set of clear instructions – talking to your cleaning team is great, but it can be much more effective to leave them with a clearly written or typed set of instructions that they can refer to in your absence, or to prevent them from having to ask you questions when all you want them to do, is get on clean your home!

Should you stay at home while they clean, or leave them to it?

While you absolutely can remain in the home while the cleaning service work their magic, many people find it more helpful to get on with tasks they otherwise wouldn’t have had the time or energy to do, while the cleaners are there. However, should you prefer to stay in the home while they work (or need to stay in the home due to work or childcare commitments), it’s important that the cleaning team are give the space and privacy they need to carry out their work effectively. No hovering in the background checking on them, or following them around like a lost puppy as they go from room to room!

Having your home professionally cleaned can be a real time (and life!) saver, all that is asked of you is a quick tidy up before each visit, and clear communication with the cleaning team (or cleaning person) before they start, something that even the busiest of people should be able to manage with ease.
