Are You Cleaning These 11 Dirty Spots as Often as You Should?

To keep your home clean all of the time is a challenge, and many of us tend to focus on certain areas of the home, without paying attention to other areas that could actually be a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria.

Here are just 11 of the many dirty spots around the home that you might have been overlooking, but definitely should be tackling!

  1. Around the stove

It’s easy to focus on the stove itself, without paying attention to the grease and grime that will inevitably have built up around it on the wall and tiles. Tackle this area frequently to avoid it from becoming too difficult to clean in the future.

  1. The refrigerator

Even if you regularly clear old food out of your refrigerator, do you take the time to clean it from top to bottom inside, too? Probably not. A deep clean of your refrigerator is required at least every couple of months, but if you hate the thought of it, why not ask a cleaning company to come in and do it as and when required?

  1. Trashcans

Germs and grime can quickly build up inside your trash can, even if you think you’re being careful when placing trash inside it. Wipe it down frequently with a disinfecting solution, and if possible, rinse it out with dish soap and warm water at least once a month.

  1. Door and appliance handles

Touched regularly, these are well-known hot spots for germs, and as such, should be sanitized frequently.

 Sponges

We’ve all left our sponges for months on end without replacing them, but it is a good idea to at least soak the sponge in diluted bleach if you don’t plan to replace it frequently.

  1. Sinks and faucets

Sinks and faucets can be riddled with bacteria without you knowing it, so try to take the time to clean them thoroughly at least once a week, and more often if you live in a multi-occupancy home.

  1. Toothbrush and holder

It’s always a good idea to keep your toothbrush covered, or at the very least, as far away from the toilet as possible, to prevent it from being covered in tiny but harmful particles that can enter the air when the toilet is flushed without the cover. Even if you do keep your toothbrush covered or away from the toilet, try to clean the holder at least once a week, or if appropriate, run it through the dishwasher.

  1. TV remotes

Any type of audio or visual controller used frequently is likely to be playing host to a variety of germs and grime, so it’s always a good idea to clean them with sanitizing wipes as often as possible.

  1. Pet toys

Our pets toys go inside their mouths (and goodness knows where else!) on a regular basis, but fortunately most can easily be cleaned with warm soapy water, or thrown into the washing machine.

  1. The area around the toilet

Cleaning the toilet regularly is great, but don’t forget about the area around it, which can often be just as grubby as the toilet itself, surprisingly.

  1. Purses and wallets

Touched often, and left lying around on countertops frequently, purses and wallets can be a veritable hive of bacteria. Wipe them down every few days (or better yet, daily), to minimize the transferral of germs from the outside world to your home.
