Your refrigerator is used so frequently that it’s not always easy to keep it clean, however, considering food items are stored there, it’s important that you make the effort to keep it as hygienically clean as possible. One way of ensuring that the entire fridge gets a thorough clean is by gradually emptying the food stored in it, so that cleaning it properly is made easier.
Read on for more top tips for getting your refrigerator to a hygienically clean standard:
Clean Every part of the fridge
Even if you give your fridge a quick clean once a week, there can be no substitute for cleaning every drawer, compartment and tray – not forgetting the door – every month without fail. Bacteria can lurk in every corner and is not always visible to the naked eye.
Use dish soap and paper towels for standard cleaning
For a refrigerator that isn’t in too bad a state, simply use hot water, paper towels and dish soap to clean it from top to bottom.
Use a diluted bleach solution for tougher to clean stains
While you don’t want any of the food items inside your fridge to take on the unpleasant smell of bleach, there can be no denying its power at keeping bacteria at bay, so in some instances it’s advisable to use it provided it’s diluted. Pour one teaspoon of bleach (if you can buy unscented bleach, so much the better) into a quart of water and use it to wipe down your fridge from top to bottom. To ensure nothing becomes tainted, make sure that the fridge is thoroughly dry before you put any food items back in.
Don’t forget the handle
Handles always have the potential to get super grubby, and many microbes and nasty bacteria could be lurking on their surfaces. So, always wipe the fridge door handle thoroughly after you’ve finished cleaning the rest of the fridge. It’s a good idea to keep some disposable sanitary wipes handy near your fridge so that you can wipe the handle down once a day or after particularly sticky fingers have been using it!
Store food items correctly in your fridge
Foods that can support bacterial growth such as eggs, should always be kept in the coldest parts of your fridge, towards the back. Those items that are less sensitive, such as condiments, can be placed in the door where there is more temperature fluctuation.
Avoid over-filling
Ramming your fridge chock full of items will only serve to prevent the cold air from circulating, and make it not perform as well as it should.
The last thing you want is for the food in your fridge to make you or other members of your household sick, so keep it as clean as you can, and if you can’t be bothered to do it yourself or don’t have the time, simply call in the cleaning professionals to clean it for you.
