Are You Forgetting To Clean These 5 Places In Your Home?

Places to Clean

With spring in the air, it’s probably time that you forced yourself to think about giving your home a good going over and getting down and dirty with every nook and cranny!

We all have areas of our homes that we begrudgingly clean every now and then, or avoid cleaning altogether, either because they’re too awkward to reach or are just downright unpleasant. But we really should try to clean these spaces at least once a year, so read on to find out if you’re forgetting to clean these commonly missed 5 places in your home, and how you can clean them quickly and effectively:

  1. The trash bins

All bins tend to get a bit grotty over time, and while we might be great at throwing things at the bin, we’re not always so great at aiming accurately and getting those items in the bin. This results in splotches and smears of all manner of debris and food items on the exterior of the bin, and inside it, too. Our bins can get especially mucky if we don’t put a liner in them and simply turn them upside down to shake the trash out.

A simple wash with any cleaning solution (preferably anti-bacterial) and then allowing the trash bins to dry thoroughly should suffice, but doing this more regularly will naturally result in less soaking or scrubbing each time.

Larger trash cans, such as those used for outdoor waste, or for placing the trash in from your indoor bins ready for pick up by the removal vans, are slightly trickier to keep clean. But cleaning them outside means that you don’t have to worry so much about making a mess with water, so you could hose them down and leave them until they’re dry. Doing this weekly will help make them smell less pongy and will make the task of cleaning them, far easier.

  1. Light fixtures

These are easily forgotten about, especially when they’re hanging out of reach, but they’re guaranteed to have at least a build-up of dust on them, and you may even find that the light they project becomes stronger after you’ve cleaned them! A quick wipe with a damp rag should be enough, and a light dusting of the bulbs, too. Doing this when the light isn’t in use, is naturally simpler.

  1. Light switches

Now these tend to get grubby over time, and not only with dirt that’s visible to the eye, but with germs and bacteria, too, especially when you think of how often we use them and how often we don’t wash our hands before doing so.

It’s always a good idea to wipe them down with an anti-bacterial solution to help prevent the spread of nasty bacteria, and again, try to do so more regularly to keep the possible spread of germs down.

  1. Skirting boards

These get forgotten about, for sure, and it’s not hard to see why. We really do need to get on our hands and knees to clean these properly, but you might be able to remove some dust and grime by using the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

  1. Underneath the sofa/armchairs

Sofa’s and armchairs can be a real pain to shift for cleaning purposes, but you really should try to get underneath them with the vacuum cleaner, at least every few months. Who knows, you might even be pleasantly surprised at what you find underneath them!
