Homemade Solutions for Cleaning Glass In The Home

Glass Cleaning

Streaky, dusty and grimy glass – whether it’s on your windows or any glass items in your home such as mirrors – will quickly make the place look unkempt and uncared for, so it’s important to clean glass regularly. While there are many commercial cleaning solutions available, many of us nowadays prefer to use non-chemical preparations, so here are a few cleaning solutions that you can make yourself and which won’t harm you or the environment, but will still give you sparkling and streak free glass:

  • Homemade solution number one:

To get rid of the residue that can quickly build up on glass from the repeated use of commercial cleaning solutions, you can make this simple concoction in an empty spray bottle.

¼ cup castile soap

¼ cup of white vinegar

1 gallon of water

Spray this solution liberally onto your windows or mirrors and simply wipe them down with paper towels or better yet, newspaper, until the residue is eliminated.

  • Homemade solution number two:

This preparation is great for keeping your glass free of streaks and will also prevent the build up of frost in the cold weather:

½ cup of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl)

4 cups of water

Pop this simple mixture into a spray bottle and apply it liberally to the glass but ensure that you are in a ventilated area when doing so. After spraying, wipe down with paper towels or newspaper.

  • Homemade solution number three:

Some glass cleaning solutions don’t smell very pleasant, so to create one that smells fresh and zesty, simply make a preparation with lemon juice.

½ cup lemon juice

2 cups of water

1 teaspoon castile soap (optional)

This will be effective when sprayed liberally onto any glass surface and adding a small amount of castile soap will make it even more effective.

  • Homemade solution number four:

Streaking on glass is a real issue for most of us, but this simple solution should help to drastically reduce it.

1 tbsp corn starch

4 cups of warm water

¼ cup white vinegar

Be warned that this preparation dries extremely quickly, so try to apply it on a day when the weather is cooler.

  • Homemade solution number five:

Hard water can quickly build up on glass within the home, but with this solution you should be able to better combat it.

Full strength white vinegar

Lesser hard water deposits may be removed by diluting the vinegar with water, but for more stubborn stains, you will need to use pure, undiluted vinegar. Be sure to do this only when the area you are in is ventilated, as the vinegar fumes will hurt your eyes and may even affect your ability to breathe properly.

  • Homemade solution number six:

Disinfecting your glass is also important, particularly when grubby hands might touch it regularly. This easy solution should help reduce the germs and bacteria that might be present.

4 tbsp ammonia

2 tbsp white vinegar

4 cups water

Spray liberally and wipe down afterwards as usual and note that this solution is also very effective in kitchens and bathrooms, too.

With these easy to create homemade preparations, your glass should be streak free and sparkling with minimal effort, in next to no time.
