One of the most important ways to ensure that your bedroom becomes a space that you can relax and unwind in, is to banish kids from entering it! If this feels too cruel, then you could try having certain times when they’re permitted inside and make it very clear that there are ‘mummy’ or ‘daddy’ times of the day when they must learn to amuse themselves without you.
In all seriousness, while our kids are our lifeline and we cherish them, we do need some time and space to be alone with our thoughts, or to simply have some quiet time without interruptions. So, depending on the age of your kids and their level of dependency upon you, try to limit their time in your bedroom so that it can remain your sanctuary.
Once you’ve banished the kids, here are a few other simple, affordable steps for making your bedroom into the perfect sanctuary:
Keep it clean
This is infinitely easier to do when kids aren’t in the picture, and there should be no excuse for you not to keep your bedroom clean if they’re not around. While we may see our bedroom as just the space we sleep in, sleep is very important and trying to get some shuteye in an untidy or dirty room, will always be more difficult. Not only that, but if your bedroom was more welcoming, then perhaps you’d be encouraged to spend more downtime in it and enjoy it for purposes other than merely sleeping.
Don’t neglect dusting either, as not only does it not look very nice, but it can play havoc with any allergies you might be suffering from.
De-clutter
We always try to instil in our kids that they should put their toys, games and clothes away when they’ve finished with them, so it stands to reason that we as adults, should set them a good example by keeping our bedroom free from unnecessary clutter. Having surfaces such as table tops completely hidden by various items, is not good for the mind, and when we see clutter in what should resemble a sanctuary, we find it harder to process our thoughts in a logical manner.
Always try to make your bed and do it the minute you climb out of it, otherwise you’re far less likely to do it at all. A freshly made bed looks far more inviting come bedtime, and your entire room will instantly be made to look tidier.
If your bedroom has lost its appeal, consider keeping it clean, tidy and free from kids and you could be well on your way to having your very own sanctuary within your home.
