There are some niggly and troublesome cleaning tasks that are not always part of your everyday cleaning schedule, but still need to be taken care of, nonetheless. With some simple but effective cleaning tips, these annoying little chores can become a breeze.
Do you have small necked decanters and/or vases, antique apothecary bottles or in fact, any small bottles that you find awkward to clean as they’re too small to get your hand inside? If you do, this easy solution will see you cleaning them far more often and being extremely pleased with the results. Fill the bottle, vase or decanter with water straight from the tap, then drop an ordinary denture cleaning tablet inside and leave it to fizz away overnight. For some bottles, this alone will be enough to see them sparkling from the inside out, but for those with tougher stains, you may need to give a light scrub with a narrow, nylon brush.
More and more of us are lighting candles in our homes to create ambient lighting or to fragrance the air, but scraping the melted wax out of the holders once the candle has burned down is not an easy, or pleasant tax. It’s possible to risk scratching or breaking the candle holder when you’re doing this, too. Instead, try popping the candle holders into your freezer for a couple of hours and when you remove them, the frozen wax should simply drop right out, job done!
Most of us don’t have a problem with mildew all year round, but our homes will see some of it appearing at least once a year, especially in damp areas such as bathrooms, and cleaning it can be a time consuming and dangerous job, with the spores from the mildew able to make you sick and/or aggravate symptoms of asthma or allergies. While there are few tips for cleaning it, other than elbow grease and bleach or your favourite household bacteria removing solution, there are plenty of effective tips for preventing it, and as the phrase goes: prevention is better than cure. Some ways of preventing mildew in your home are to keep all surfaces clean and dry, improve the air circulation either with the use of fans or by opening windows and do your best to reduce dampness, such as by hanging damp items like towels, someplace that they can air and dry out fully. In areas of your home where ventilation is poor, such as the basement, install open shelving, use a dehumidifier and/or fan and store items in airtight containers. For musty, damp closets, leave an incandescent light bulb on to help dry the air.
When your fabric lampshades become covered in thick layers of dust, which they inevitable will, simply remove it all with an adhesive lint roller. Hold the shade still and run the roller all over the exterior, and you’ll be impressed with the results.
Tips to simplify cleaning are all well and good, but what if you hate cleaning or don’t have the time to do it? One simple solution is to hire the services of a cleaning company, who will employ their own tips and effective methods to get your home clean and shipshape.
