Cleaning windows is a task few of us relish, and perhaps because we tend to use the wrong tools for the job. With outdated methods, what could be a relatively swift job, turns into a nightmare chore that takes up way too much of our time. However, with the right tools, cleaning windows, mirrors and other glass items can be a task that you no longer dread, and which can be carried out in a fraction of the time:
Ditch the newspaper and scrap the gallons of cleaning solution:
While many are a fan of using newspaper to clean windows and mirrors, it makes your hands extremely black and when you accidentally deposit the ink residue all over your home, you’re left with an even bigger cleaning task than when you began. So, use microfibre cloths instead. Whether you’re dusting, cleaning shiny surfaces such as granite, polishing stainless steel or cleaning your windows, these cloths should always be your weapon of choice. Able to keep your glass streak-free and without leaving your hands stained, microfiber cloths are cheap and easily accessible, too.
You may think that you need gallons of glass cleaning solution to get your windows and mirrors sparkling again, but you’d be wrong. What you do need, is some ammonia, a bucket and a squeegee. Here is the recipe for your own window cleaning solution:
- Buy a bottle of ammonia for around a dollar – or sudsy ammonia which has detergent added to help the dirt come off easier – and then add a quarter cup to a large bucket of water. Bingo, you’ve got the best, and most affordable, glass cleaning solution on the planet!
Once your solution is ready, simply dip your squeegee in and get it thoroughly soaked in the ammonia before scrubbing your windows, or mirrors. Get rid of the excess water with your squeegee then take your microfiber cloth and polish them dry.
While this method works wonders for the outside of your windows, you might want to alter your method just a little for tackling the inside of your windows or any other glass products such as mirrors. To clean these, you’ll need two microfiber cloths, one which will be wet and one which will remain dry. Dampen one cloth, wring it out and wipe it all over the inside of the windows or onto any mirrors, then wipe them dry with the other cloth.
If you don’t have the time to get your windows clean, then why not employ a cleaner from a reputable company who can do it for you? With many price plans and schedules, cleaning services are more affordable than you might think and can save you a whole load of time and effort.
