Tips For Deep Cleaning Your Home

No matter how much you try to keep your home clean and tidy, there will be times when you’re too tired, too busy or simply too under motivated to keep on top of things, and things can quickly escalate until your home is looking cluttered and dirty. So, if your home has gotten into a bad state and you need to give it a deeper clean, here are a few simple tips:

Do a spot of decluttering

It can be surprisingly rewarding to declutter your home every now and then, and once you’ve done it, you’ll find cleaning takes much less time and effort. That said, try to get rid of items you no longer want or need, rather than simply shifting them elsewhere to gather dust!

Start at the top and work your way down

Try to work in this order when giving your home the deep clean treatment:

  • Ceiling
  • Ceiling trim
  • Ceiling light fixtures
  • Walls
  • Wall trims
  • Baseboards

This should ensure that any dust and grime that gets shifted from the top of your home, can be cleaned up easily as you work your way down. Microfiber cloths are great for getting the dust to stick rather than shift around, and for those areas where a vacuum cleaner won’t reach. If you need to use a damp cloth and some cleaning solution, try not to use too much water and be sure to dry each area off as you clean it to avoid smears and residue.

Don’t leave out your windows

Windows can be a pain to clean, but the effort you put in is always worth it, particularly as windows are often a predominant feature in a room. Vinegar and old newspaper is a traditional tried and tested method that gives outstanding results, but may require a little elbow grease for those tougher to clean windows. If you don’t have the time, energy or inclination to clean your windows yourself, why not call in the professionals and have them get your windows sparkling for you.

While it’s important to clean the glass on your windows, it’s equally important not to neglect the drapes or blinds, and these can often be kept clean with the attachment on a vacuum cleaner. If your drapes are very dirty however, you may need to get them professionally cleaned if they won’t fit into your washing machine.

Get dusting

Once you’ve dusted all the items in your home, move onto the hard surfaces such as wooden furniture and shelving units. For wood, try using a beeswax based cleaner, for other surfaces, your favourite regular cleaning solution should do the trick. For lampshades with a build-up of dust on them, a lint roller works wonders.

Rejuvenate your floors

It may be a frightful and tiresome bore, but to get your floors thoroughly clean, you simply must move furniture and other large items so that you can reach underneath them. A good vacuum cleaner will have extendable attachments for getting to some harder to reach areas and is a great tool for eliminating dust and other dirt. Once you’ve gotten rid of dust and dander etc, you can then either mop your floors or clean your carpets with a shampoo.

As with any of these deep cleaning tips, the easiest way to put them into practice, is to have someone else do them for you! A reliable cleaning service will make short work of cleaning your home from top to bottom, saving you the time and effort.
