Top Tips For Cleaning Hard To Reach Places In The Home

Even if you think you haven’t missed a spot when cleaning your home, there will always be one or two pesky places that are tricky to reach, and hence, get missed out during regular (and sometimes even deep) cleaning sessions.

While scheduling a deep clean from a professional home cleaning service is the most effective way to ensure that not a single nook or cranny in your home is left dirty, should you wish to do it yourself, here are some top tips for getting those hard to reach places, clean:

Ceiling fans and light fixtures

Take a pillowcase and when standing safely on a step ladder, place your hand inside it, and run it gently over the ceiling fan blades, back and forth. Then wipe the blades with a damp cloth after, and shake the pillowcase outside before washing it as normal.

For light fixtures, turn off the power, and where possible, remove them and wash them in hot, soapy water. If they can’t be removed, simply wipe them with a microfiber cloth while standing safely on a stepladder.

Behind and underneath appliances

Food debris and dust easily accumulate underneath and behind appliances such as cookers and refrigerators, and if said appliances can be switched off and moved, you can simply use your preferred cleaning method to remove all dirt, dust and bacteria once this has been done. You may need to use a degreaser, and don’t forget to clean the sides of the appliances, too.

Baseboards and trims

A microfiber cloth or the dusting attachment on a vacuum can be used to get these spotlessly clean. If any dirt or stains remain, try using a soft-bristled brush dipped in soapy water, or a magic eraser.

Air vents and ducts

When they trap dander, dust and allergens, air vents and ducts can’t perform at their best, so you should clean them regularly by removing the covers and washing them in hot, soapy water. The brush attachment on a vacuum can be used to clean the vents interior. Ducts typically require professional cleaning, but regularly changing their filters can help them perform at their best for longer.

Underneath furniture

If you’re unable to move furniture to vacuum and mop underneath it, you can simply use a long, flat attachment on a vacuum to get right underneath the furniture in your home.

Window tracks and blinds

The brush attachment on your vacuum can work well for removing dust and debris trapped in the tracks of your windows, and you can clean them afterwards with a toothbrush dipped in soapy water, and a damp cloth. If blinds can be removed, you may soak them in the tub in soapy water, or simply close them and run a microfiber cloth over the slats.

Behind and underneath the toilet

Although it can be easy to forget about, it’s important to keep these areas clean by mopping behind the toilet at least once a month, and cleaning the base and bottom of the toilet with a disinfectant cleaning solution.

Inside cabinets and drawers

Used often, you should clean the interior of your cabinets and drawers in the home – particularly those in the kitchen – every couple of months or so, by removing everything and wiping them down with a damp cloth soaked in soapy water.

We can all be forgiven for forgetting to clean every single hard-to-reach inch of our homes on a regular basis, but we can’t be forgiven for neglecting them entirely. With plenty of amazing home cleaning services available all over the country, there’s simply no excuse for getting your entire home clean, and armed with the above tips, you can even do it yourself…if you really wanted to!
